Croakheads North: An Interview with Maisie
Q: What does the scene mean to you personally?
A: The scene means a lot to me. I feel like we’ve seen a real shift towards greater inclusivity in recent years, and it’s amazing to be able to turn up to events and see such a diverse mix of people feeling welcome and enjoying themselves together. That’s something I find really wholesome and important.
Q: Which Northern grassroots venue shaped you the most, and why?
A: I’d say The Kaz [in Liverpool]! It’s somewhere I’ve always felt comfortable and welcomed. As someone who runs queer events, there was a time when I often felt out of place because of my sexuality, but The Kaz has always been a space where I’ve felt safe and accepted. It has such a warm, inclusive atmosphere. For me, seeing queer people confidently being their true selves helped me understand that I didn’t need to hide who I am - it showed me that being authentic is something to be celebrated. The events are always fantastic, the music is incredible, and the vibes are ALWAYS up. Plus, they sell Jubel, which is definitely a bonus!
Q: What’s the biggest challenge facing grassroots venues in your area now?
I think the biggest issue facing grassroots venues in Liverpool is financial sustainability. Rising costs, the cost-of-living crisis, and changing audience habits are making it harder for independent venues to survive.
These spaces are essential for supporting emerging artists and creating inclusive communities, so it’s really important that they’re protected and supported.
Q: What gives you hope for the future of Northern nightlife?
I mean, northerners just do it best, don’t they? (Not that I’m biased or anything!) I think people are really starting to recognise just how much the North has to offer—the energy, the creativity, and most importantly, how welcoming people are. It’s great to see the region getting the recognition it deserves. The sense of community here is genuinely unmatched, and that’s something we all need more of.
People go to events to have a good time, meet others, and feel a sense of connection. Seeing those communities continue to grow definitely gives me hope for the future.
